Dum Di Dum Di Dum...

I've always loved this song from the very first day I heard it more than 12 years ago. I was playing the song on my computer and dancing in the goofiest of ways in front of my other half when she said a smile on her face "This song is so you..."I stopped and just gave her an even sillier smile. This wasn't the first time someone has said that to me. A close friend of mine has said that to me on numerous occasions. The only thing that bothers me is that they never consider the songs they associate with me as cool. They know that one of my old time favourite classics is this one by Billy Joel. and this one from the Proclaimers. They kind of wonder why a guy born in the mid 80's like would like music belonging to the previous generation.

Actually, I happen to know exactly why I like each of these songs. Because I think they are cool in their own way.

Quizzical by Juliet the Orange is fun because it t's one of those rare songs sang from a woman's perspective about their own insecurities about being too ugly, too plain or too whatever... and it gets projected onto this love song to the man she sings to.... asking him "I can't cook.. my toes are huge, I'm messy, I've got issues, I'm clingy.. .Are you sure you'd want to be with a girl like me?  "  And it's all sang in a rather light hearted manner. Combining humour, emotion and poetry into a melody....What's not to like? Pretty awesome piece of song writing if you ask me. I'm so hoping you'd find the song cooler now that you've read that. :-P

As for We didn't Start the Fire by Billy Joel is a song I discovered out of chance... at a Karaoke session with some buddies. Our Spanish speaking Peruvian buddy and his good friend started singing (or rather screaming) it... and by the end of the song, I was speechless... both at their singing.. and the lyrics of the song. I've always been interested in History. And this actually a running social commentry of current event all they way from the 60s to 80s... in the form of a song! How can you not find that cool? I mean.. it even rhymes! I don't care if anyone else thinks its geeky or lame. I love it.

And that last one.. 500 miles by the Proclaimers.... it's a song sang by Scottish twin brothers about a man that would..... walk 500 miles and 500 more just to be the man who walked a thousand miles to fall down at your door.... tadadada... tadadada..tadadadumdadaddadum..dum... Actually.. I just like singing along to it. It's not really awesome in any hidden way... just really really fun. :-P

Anyway, it's 2.00am as I write this. I'm pretty sure tomorrow I'll be cursing myself in the morning for singing silly songs in the middle of the night instead sleeping. So good night folks.... If you have a lame song that you secretly find cool for reasons of your own... do share it with me!

Cheers!

It's the picture of a thousand sunsets,
It's the freedom of a thousand doves,
Baby, you should paint my love...

The Value of Art

I’ve always been one to enjoy instrumental music. I remember growing up listening over and over again to my father’s cassette of the guitar band The Shadows. I’d close my eyes and follow the tune in my head, picturing the little musical notes riding up and down the scale.

And despite not having any words at all to convey what it’s trying to say, instrumental music had a way of conveying its own meaning to the listener. They get you excited, sad, happy, light, sombre, tense and even playful just simple by the progression and pattern of notes. And that kind of resonated in me. That magically, emotions can be conveyed and feeling can be shared with not so much as a word. There is something so simple, so beautiful, and so mysterious about to me.

I have been described as a person of many words. But what people don’t understand about me is this – words fail me sometimes. There are times when the words that form in my head to convey the feeling that is within is inadequate. There is no word to describe the intensity that I feel sometimes, or the conflict and harmony that exist together at the same time.

And that’s where the music comes in. It expresses what the words cannot. Like right now, when my heart is filled with many different feelings and thoughts; forlorn over certain things, thankfulness over others, a bit of regret, a bit of joy, a bucket load of remorse, a dash of hope. Hard as I try to put it in words, there is no describing it.

I began to understand how not just music, but also song, dance and any sort of art help people complete the expression that’s in their heart. Why some people naturally burst out in song or dance, play the guitar, paint, draw, so simply just hum. There are verses, there are choruses, there are variations and there are bridges. There is form and pattern in art, yet it’s not robotic or clinical. It’s fluid, natural and organic. Like our bodies, our souls, our lives.

There is nothing ground breaking is what I am saying here. Most people who haven’t stuck their heads in books, numbers, figures and charts (or aren’t engineers) like me would have figured that out long ago. Art, like music, song or dance is the projection of the heart that resides in us. To deny it is to deny our hearts, and to deny our hearts is to deny our lives.

Friendship is unnecessary, like philosophy, like art, like the universe itself (for God did not need to create). It has no survival value; rather it is one of those things which give value to survival. ~ CS Lewis

Sing & Dance

I'm such a sucker for MTV's like this. Simple, original, light hearted and fun driven...

I think it's safe to say that singing and dancing is one of the most timeless form of human entertainment. We've been doing it for centuries... and we will still be doing it for centuries to come regardless of how technology evolves.

Something about watching fellow human beings move in sync, in rhythm to a catchy tune that never ceases to make people smile and laugh.

Or maybe it's just the monkey heads.

Concerts & Such

A few weeks ago, there was a massive jam in KL... and it was all because of this boy.

That's right. Justin Bieber was in town for a concert on a Thursday night... and half of the families in the Klang valley seemed to be attending at Stadium Merdeka. That's what the 'young' people are into these days. The other half seemed to be stuck trying to run AWAY from Stadium Merdeka.

I would have nothing to do with that Bieber-fever of course. But 3 days later... we did go watch these old dudes instead.

That's right. On the same week everyone was watching the very 'in' Bieber, I was more geared up watching the 'outdated' Michael Learns to Rock at KLCC.

I think only people my age (26) and above would have any relation (or memory) of MLTR. I mean.... they became famours a long long time ago.. in the 90's.... and particularly in Asia only... and particularly with ME only. It was the first audio album I had ever bought in my life.. and remains one of those 'best thing I ever did' moments in my life. I listened to that cassette for months on end...

How was the concert? Well... if the Bieber concert was like a electrifying showcase of fresh, young talent, then the MLTR was very much the long awaited and anticipated reunion of all friends. EVERYONE in the crowd know almost every song by heart... a lot of us grew up listening to their songs.. and a lot of their songs remain very much evergreen (IMHO)

It kinda made me ponder a bit. It has been 10 years since I bothered listening to a MLTR song. And yet when they started singing, it all came back to me so naturally. They say some things never leave you.. they just get stored away.

10 years ago, I remember MLTR themselves playing at Stadium Merdeka, playing to a sell out crowd, causing traffic jams. I couldn't afford to attend then, but on that day, I was able to.... like some long forgotten dream suddenly realized....It occured to me that I was no longer one of the 'in' or 'young' crowd... but I also realized.. I didn't really mind at all. :-)

Anyway, I don't really have a point to make here..I just promised myself I woud write SOMETHING.. even if it's done in a hurry (like now). I will share this particular song that used to be my official 'emo' song. It was the song I sang to myself when my first major crush went for another guy... I think I've always been secretly melodramatic that way... :-P

Fastball - Out of My Head

This song gets me in such a nostalgic mood.

I notice I tend to like simple songs like this. Songs with a very clear and easy to follow tunes.. almost folk-ish even. Songs you sing along to.

Especially so when the song has beautiful simple lyrics.

The thing about words is this - They are beautiful not when they rhyme.. they are beautiful when they come from the heart.

No Place Like Home

Love is in the air
Everywhere I look around
Love is in the air
Every sight and every sound

Love is in the air
In the whisper of the trees
Love is in the air
In the thunder of the sea

I stood still listening to the band crooning out this song, half bobbing my head, half tapping my feet. A smile crept up my face last night as I heard it. Something about the lyrics was really agreeable with me. To have a long crappy, stressful day, then to suddenly walk into a live band singining 'Love is In The Air' with a big grin on their faces, its.... its.... well, lets just say its a great way to lift your spirits.

Cool night breezes, open air cafes, friendly people, great food, live music everywhere.. sometimes I don't understand why people don't think this is a great country to live in. For all the charm, beauty and wonder of foreign lands, for all the excitement, thrill and adventure it offers, I still find that in the end - there is no place like home...

Not because it's 'prettier' or 'nicer' or anything... but simply because it is what it is - Home.

“Home is a place you grow up wanting to leave, and grow old wanting to get back to” John Ed Pearce

One Day... Some Day...

One day I will see you falling in love
With some lovely girl and her long dark curls
Thanking me for all the things I've done

One day... one day
Someday you will see me in your arms
Thanking you for all the things you've done

One day... one day
Someday you will see me clutching
At precious love that I've found

I didn't see it around
Someday you will see me in your arms
Thanking you for all the things you've done

Someday... someday
Playing with fire
Now quench desire

Stick to your faith
And you'll see
Baby don't be so impatient

Things will go your way
For patience is a virtue
One day we will walk hand in hand

On the mountain top where it's never hot
One day we will both find the loves
That we've longing for

It's not metaphor
One day... one day
One day... one day

Trust in your heart I'll be your lark
Singing through the days and the nights
The days

Today you will see me walking the aisle
It's my wedding day
You promised to stay

Today I will see you and your smile
You've come in gay though you've traveled for miles
Today... today

Playing with fire
Now quench desire
Stick to your faith

And you'll see
Baby don't be so impatient
Things will go your way

For patience is a virtue

A Crappy Day

Free MP3 Downloads at MP3-Codes.com

I think I woke up on the wrong side of the bed today. I'm feeling like crap. And when I'm feeling like crap.. I like listening to songs like these.. to sort of sooth myself. Something about the deep, low tone of the celo combined with the piano gliding through the notes and the singer singing passionately yet in such a nonchalant kind of way... calms me down.

I'm know a lot of people think acting like you know how to enjoy jazz music is a bit highbrow. But I just like how it sounds, that's all. I don't really know a lot about jazz except that some (like this one) sounds oh-so-awesome... and some just like their making stuff up and trying to make it look deliberate.

Anyway... on this crappy Monday afternoon.. when everything seems to just seem that bit off key, I don't want to talk about what happened. I don't want to talk about who pissed me off. I don't want to talk about what's wrong. I just want to lie in bed, listen to my music, stare at my phone and pretend that through sheer willpower, the right person is going to call and ask me how I am.

And for a change, I'd like to be completely selfish in that conversation. I'd like for that person to be totally unconcerned about themselves and listen to what I have to say. For me to rant and vent for a change. I'd want to bitch on and on and on about the this idiot and that moron, this annoying thing and that stupid thing. And at the end of it all.. I'd just want that person to say "Hey.. it's OK, you're just having a bad day. Let me buy you dinner OK?" And I will smile and in my heart, it will already start feeling like perhaps the day wasn't totally crappy after all.

SIGH............

Me and my silly talk. I annoy even myself sometimes.

Never Alone

Free MP3 Downloads at MP3-Codes.com

I first heard this song around 8 months ago when someone quoted it to me in a Christmas card. I know I've already posted this song here before, but I was just listening to it over and over again today (I tend to do that)... thinking about a great many things.

Do you ever find that you can't help but think of specific things or specific people whenever a certain song comes along? I don't know if it's like that for anyone else, but for me there are often specific memories embedded in individual songs. And this song had a whole chapter of heartbreaking, hopeful and humbling events associated with it.

I tend to get very into things that I enjoy and  a sense of mixed feelings come over me every time I close my eyes and listen to this song. A tinge of sadness, a honest word of caution, a loving offer of comfort and a general sense of hope sort of sprinkles itself throughout the song. For many reasons (personal & general), this song has become rather special to me. It's the kind of song with words that, were they yours, you'd say only to someone really special... someone who meant something to you.. someone you truly and honestly care about.

At least that's what I think.

The Day Finger Pickers Took Over the World

I'm actually a big fan of Tommy Emmanuel the Australian guitarist. The guys an amazing one man show. And if you play the guitar, you'll be able to appreciate just how mind boggling (and not to mention totally awesome) it really is for one single person to be able to manipulate the guitar like that.

He took this song, written and played by Mason Williams decades ago:

And played it in his own super amazing way and this is what you get, raw, real and live:

I know there are plenty of other great guitarist out there... but I'm pretty sure no one finger picks like he does... I don't know if he's Catholic, but he's practically the Patron Saint of Finger Pickers.

A song for you

I don’t know how true this is for other people, but specific songs tend to remind me of specific people. Whenever I hear certain songs, my thoughts inevitably turn to them. There aren’t really any clear associations sometimes, and sometimes, the link between the song and the person is obvious, other times it can be rather obscure. Just for the fun of it, here is some of it:

All Backstreet Boys songs – Reminds me of Thilaga because she was so crazy about them during high school. I insisted on calling them the Backside Boys.. just to take jibes at her. She seriously hated me for that.

All Tamil songs – remind me of Suresh who overloaded me with enough tamil songs to last a life time during his wedding. The speakers were so loud it caused a power overload that short the circuits and threatened to burn down the whole hall, along with everyone in it.

I’m a slave for you by Britney Spears – My best friend during high school, Epul idolized Britney to no end. I hated this song, but he listened to it non-stop… said it was ‘different’. I should have figured out he was gay back then when he first started imitating Britney dance moves while singing this song.

Lips of an Angel by Hinder – Reminds me of Amanda.. a brilliant but enigmatic writer I got to know a few years ago in college. She really had a way with words… and every time I heard her speeches or read her writings, I was blown away. It’s a shame we never got to know each other better. This reminds me of her because when I got to know her, this was her favourite song. Wonder how she is now.

I’m too sexy by Right Said Fred – Another best friend from the past, Roshan…. Simply because the guy is just too damn good looking for his own good, and knows it only too well. Epul & I would roll our eyes everytime girls went gaga around him. Even the female teachers swoon at the sight of him. You could see the smirk on his face… I imagine this is the song he sings in front of the mirror in his room.

Lemon Tree by Fool Garden – reminds me of Ming, Fook & Liew…. Because when we were 12 years old making our way up to Cameron Highlands during a school excursion, the teachers forced us to have a karaoke competition for entertainment (or torture). Lemon Tree was the hottest song at the time. Don’t tell anyone, but I still know the words by heart even till today.

In the Club by Fifty Cent – reminds me of Giant who knew the lyrics by heart and convinced me that Chinese guys can sing a perfect gangster rap after all… albeit never in public.

Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen – reminds me of Tat.. who again knew all the words (not to mention the tune) for this bizarre & mind boggling song and sang it on our way to Penang. My hats off to you Tat. You're a great guy

Umbrella by Rihanna – reminds me of my boss (of all persons). Driving at 160kmph in the dead of the night, he belts out this song word for word… with all the ‘ella ella ella… eh eh..’. I didn’t think 50 year old folks listened to such music. I couldn’t shrugged off the image for days.

Creep by Radiohead – reminds me of Jason. He played the electric guitar, called everyone ‘dude’, immensely interested in airplanes and was this mix of a Mr-Nice-Guy & mischievous little boy. Within 10 minutes of talking to him, I knew… he was the kind of cool guy I always wanted to be. But sadly, yours truly is anything but cool.

Stacy’s mom by Fountains of Wayne – reminds me of Chev who got me hooked on the song. Chev also knew where to get the best Pork Curry Wantan Mee in KL, had a soft heart for small time businesses & an obsession with fishes. Every time I walk into a computer shop, I browse for a fish themed computer mouse to buy for her. She mentioned once how awesome it would be to have it. Still no luck.

Lau Tu Qing Ge by Ah Niu – reminds me of my fiancée… because she caught me singing this song to myself once. She found it amusing that I’d actually know the words. Says it’s exactly the kind of cheesy, tacky, folksy but oh-so-honest & sincere kind of songs I’d like. Since then, she’d giggle and look at me knowingly every time the song came on air.

Anyway, it’s just a sample list. There’s a lot more where that came from… but the list goes on and on so I better stop here.

Good night world...

I Want to Live...

More Free Music at MP3-Codes.com

Good morning world....

You hear that music? You hear the drums beating?

Today, that's my song.. today my heart beats to that rhythm.

A strong solid thumping that sends the blood in blood running that bit faster.

There's plenty to be upset about, there's plenty to sulk about. Last night as I tucked myself into bed, I found myself thinking about many of the major mistakes I have made in my life. Of course I call them mistakes now because of how they didn't turn out well. I wondered if I knew then what I knew now, would I have done things differently. But that's the thing - the benefit of hindsight always comes after it's too late. I wondered if I should make a few phone calls.. to explain & apologize for the things I did or didn't do. I feel asleep halfway through recollecting who and what I did a wrong against.

But when I woke up, I felt different. The rest did me a lot of good. I walked up to the window and drew the curtains wide open, allowing the sunlight to flood the room. A new day, a new hope. You can't spend your life forever pandering over the sins of the past. Respect your past, hope for your future, but live your life in the present. I decided trying to dig up old stories in attempt to apologize wasn't the way forward. I'd probably get proper closure f I did, but it'd also bring up a painful memories & hurt for all concerned. Completely unnecessary.

I showered and got dressed. Stuffed the ear phones in my head and walked out the door. I was keen to get the day started, keen to get going... keep on living, making more 'mistakes' if I had to. I scrolled down my playlist looking for a song that will get me going that would galvanize me for the rest of the day, and voila, here's The Animal Song by Savage Garden.

Cheers.

Won't you bring me order
Tell me what to achieve
Baby, so I can move forward
Tell me what to be
Car crashes, TV shows

People runnin', run

There isn't always a reason why I like some songs and not others. This one just stuck to me from the first moment I heard it. Earphones now permanently stuck to my ears everywhere I go, I've been listening to this song over and over again. This along with a few other songs, tend to get me into this sort of detached kind of feeling from everything around me. Like I'm there in body, but really I'm just floating around observing the world silently from a distance.

In a strange way, it makes me feel at peace.

Invisible Wings, Fly Me Away

More Free Music at MP3-Codes.com

*******************************

I'm in one of those moods today. Can't seem to find the words to describe it. But it feels and reads pretty much like this song. It's a song by Zhang Shao Han @ Angela Zhang called Yin Xing De Chi Bang or literally....Invisible Wings. I don't listen to a lot of chinese songs. But sometimes, some are really really beautiful.. not to mention poetic. This one is sad but hopeful song. The kind you'd sing to yourself as you thread along a long dark tunnel. Your eyes fixed on the light at the end. You know you're going to make it. You know you will reach the end, it's just not time yet. You know you need to journey on. But right here, right now, you need courage, you need strength, but mostly, you need hope... and so you have songs like this. The lyrics don't sound quite as poetic or beautiful when translated into English.. but in mandarin, it really is very beautiful. You'll just have to take my word on that.

每一次 都在 徘徊孤單中堅強
[I put up a strong front whenever I'm wandering in loneliness]
每一次 就算很受傷也不閃淚光
[I don't blink tears when I feel hurt]
我知道 我一直有雙隱形的翅膀
[I know I always have a pair of invisible wings]
帶我飛 飛過絕望
[That will let me fly, that will let me fly over this feeling of hopelessness]

不去想 他們 擁有美麗的太陽
[I'm not going to think what beautiful suns they have]
我看見 每天的夕陽也會有變化
[The evenings that I see change everyday]
我知道 我一直有雙隱形的翅膀
[I know I always have a pair of invisible wings]
帶我飛 給我希望
[That will let me fly, that will give me hope]

我終于 看到 所有夢想都開花
[I've finally seen that all my dreams have blossomed]
追逐的年輕歌聲多嘹亮
[The sounds of the young songs I'd chased have all become clear]
我終于 翱翔 用心凝望不害怕
[I've finally soared; I have heart and I've concentrated; I'm not scared]
哪里會有風就飛多遠吧
[I'll fly wherever the wind blows me]

隱形的翅膀 讓夢恒久比天長
[These invisible wings have made my dreams permanent (realities) that will exist longer than time]
留一個愿望讓自己 想象
[I'll leave myself a wish, so that I may imagine...]

What if God was One of Us?

If God had a name, what would it be?
And would you call it to his face?
If you were faced with him in all his glory
What would you ask if you had just one question?

What if God was one of us?
Just a slob like one of us
Just a stranger on the bus
Trying to make his way home

If God had a face what would it look like?
And would you want to see?
If seeing meant that you would have to believe

In things like heaven and in jesus and the saints and all the prophets

Retro Music a.k.a the Oldies

More Free Music at MP3-Codes.com

Some people give me the funny look when they step into my car and hear what's playing on my CD.

"Why are you listening to these sort of songs?" they'd ask. They wonder what a guy in his twenties would be doing listening to songs that might as well be from the 20s. They give me a funny look as if I were some 80 year old soul trapped in a younger body.... Why else would he be listening to these.... these... OLDIES.....

But honestly, I don't know what the heck they are talking about.

It's not oldies to me. How can it be, when I'm only just listening & discovering them for the first time in my life? It's new to me. 'New'-dies if you ask me (coined that myself.. haha). Doesn't matter if it was written 5, 50 or 500 years ago. There's no real 'expiry date'. Good songs never go bad if you ask me. They just get forgotten. Which is why I listen to these old sometimes; to do my part in preserving these great music heritage. It'd be too much of a waste if really awesome songs get forgotten over the generations, overwritten by latest 'hip' songs singing about no more than shaking your booty like there's no tomorrow.

So, the next thing you sit in my car, and you find me listening to the kind of songs your mum and dad used to do, think 40 years into the future.... wouldn't you want someone to still remember all the awesome songs of our generation?

After all, I thought going retro was supposed to be cool? So lets all DO THE HUSTLE!! Haha....

Cheers

I'm not a Bushman, I'm not Australian.. but I sure love this track Waltzing Matilda by Tommy Emmanuel (Australian!) & Chet Atkins... which I later found out was the unofficial 'national anthem' of Australia. You can read about it here. If you watched the movie Australia starring Hugh Jackman and Nicole Kidman (both Australians mind you), the song is played in the opening credits, albeit in a slower, more traditional orchestra style. This is the most awesome and catchy version I've heard so far.... and get this.. It's a GUITAR DUET.. How cool is that eh?

Most days, I suspect I'm the only one in the entire country who listens to this particular track.. Most people I know don't even know who Tommy Emmanuel is, or the late Chet Atkins for the matter.

Also, I'm starting to wonder if anyone else listens to bits & pieces of country, instrumental, techno, trance pop, religious, jazz, bossa nova, oldies, mandarin & japanese songs like I do.

I'm thinking.... IM WEIRDER THAN I THOUGHT.

Fortunately, I don't listen to rap music. :-S

I hate the world today
You're so good to me
I know but I can't change
tried to tell you but you look at me like maybe I'm an angel underneath
innocent and sweet
Yesterday I cried
You must have been relieved to see the softer side
I can understand how you'd be so confused
I don't envy you
I'm a little bit of everything
all rolled into one

Chorus:
I'm a bitch, I'm a lover
I'm a child, I'm a mother
I'm a sinner, I'm a saint
I do not feel ashamed
I'm your health, I'm your dream
I'm nothing in between
You know you wouldn't want it any other way

So take me as I am
This may mean you'll have to be a stronger man
Rest assured that when I start to make you nervous
and I'm going to extremes
tomorrow I will change
and today won't mean a thing

Chorus

Just when you think you've got me figured out
the season's already changing
I think it's cool you do what you do
and don't try to save me

Chorus

I'm a bitch, I'm a tease
I'm a goddess on my knees
when you hurt, when you suffer
I'm your angel undercover
I've been numbed, I'm revived
can't say I'm not alive
You know I wouldn't want it any other way

This song is practically another one of those anthems for women, alongside songs like Respect and I Will Survive. Don't tell anyone, but this is one of those song I actually secretly enjoy but would never be caught dead singing along to. It's just kinda weird I guess singing it as a guy.

This song reminds me of quite a few women I know. Wait, let me correct that.. this song reminds me of ALL the women I know. And it also reminds me why men are perpetually confused when it comes to women. I've been trying for ages to figure them out. But sadly, I'm more lost in the woods now than ever before. I think there is no figuring them out. One day, they're this strong, tough level headed person, the other they are this fragile, vulnerable emotional wreck. Some days, they are absolutely sweet and lovely, eager to be pampered, and other days they turn into either the white witch from Narnia, or some fire breathing dragon spawned straight from hell. When you think you're threading on solid ground, you're really walking through a mine field. And when you think you're threading on egg shells, you find out later it was all unnecessary.

But the MOST baffling part of it all is actually this: Men know they wouldn't want it any other way. We are totally confused, totally baffled... but I guess that's half the reason we are so attract to women... they are so UNLIKE us... Women know this. In fact, they know it so well, this particular woman wrote it into this song.

Talk about wicked.

It's hard not to hate you and love you at the same time woman.
